jacket buying guideIf you have not yet added jackets to your wardrobe, your wardrobe may get a bad label of being incomplete! Designer jackets are essential for a woman’s closet, maybe you have several of them to accentuate your various outfits, or stick to just one – the most favorite. Jackets make great outerwear for spring or fall, when a summer jacket looks too light and a winter coat is too heavy.

Ideally you should have at least one tailored jacket and another more casual one. Fortunately you get both types in abundance. You have a wide choice. Materials vary a lot too, like cashmere, wool, silk, nylon and even fabrics created from bamboo and hemp.

What is a Jacket?

The word “jacket” has been derived from a French word “jaquet” meaning “light tunic”. This piece of clothing is ideally waist or hip length and usually worn as an outerwear. It may be fastened in the front, generally have longer sleeves (but you can get short-sleeved or sleeveless jackets for spring) and tighter, lighter and less insulating than a coat.

Puffer: Puffer suits better to late fall. This is normally made from a manmade material and stitched in sections each containing a batting. Specialty of a puffer jacket is it is one of the lightest, yet one of the most insulating jackets.

Military: Military jacket is inspired by the clothing style of armed forces and is designed as a fashion clothing, rather than a functional one.

Windbreaker (Parka): These are also known as a windcheater, an anorak or a parka, and are a functional piece of clothing designed to give protection from harsh winds and light rain. It is very thin and can be stored in small pouch and worn when needed.

Bolero: These are named after a short, bespoke Spanish coat with the same name, commonly put on by bullfighters. They can be light or more substantial, depending on the intention for which it is used.

You can choose amongst these types according to your choice, lifestyle, level of activeness and season. Better is to have one of each type and use depending on the purpose.
