Many people would prefer to go to work wearing sweatshirts and flip-flops. Wouldn’t it be great? However, as a school teacher, you surely cannot do it. You should show your young students and their parents that you are professional, competent and mature enough to be trusted. Primary teaching jobs are important for the whole society and the outer appearance is what people notice first. It has to show our inner characteristics, as well. What should you look for when choosing your attire? Professionalism and comfort are the first things you should consider, but don’t forget to express your individualism, too. Here are some more practical tips:
- Be stylish, but modest.
- Be casual, but avoid sleeveless.
- Makeup is alright, but be discrete.
- For footwear, comfort is the king.
- Jewelry: simple, minimal and classic.
Teachers usually don’t have formal uniform, but it is very important what message your attire sends. However, it’s more important how well you do your job. Some teachers can enter the classroom in polo shirt and tennis shoes and all the kids would respect them, while others can wear a tie and still children wouldn’t pay attention at all. However, parents and administration might not be so open-minded and spontaneous about teacher’s attire. Anyhow, too formal clothing should be avoided, especially when working with younger children. It’s a messy job and many times you’ll have to sit on the floor, to jump, run or dance. Therefore, female teachers should avoid dresses and skirts, trousers are the better option. Also, high-heels are reserved for the weekends, not the working days.
If you are new teacher in school, the best advice is to see how other teachers come to work and to imitate them. Or talk to the principle. Don’t be ignorant about outer appearance and don’t let your clothing ruin your career.
