flat iron 1If you are entering the market of hair straighteners, you have chances of getting fumbled at words like Tourmaline, Ceramic, infrared heat, negative ions and Titanium. These terms refer to the latest technology that helps you eliminate frizz, check hair loss caused by breakage and create a sexy shine in hair. If you know well about them, it will surely help you get the best flat iron, regarding your specific hair type.

Negative Ions

The concept here is that of any atom which has a center containing protons and neutrons with electrons revolving around it. When the atom loses an electron the atom becomes positively charged and imbalanced. When the electrons in the atoms of your hair are lost (and they are lost due to excessive heat, harsh chemicals and static electricity) they are damaged and need a boost of electrons to restore their balance. These electrons are provided by tourmaline, ceramic and titanium which emit negative ions upon heating.

Infrared Light

IR light radiates with a long wavelength that can penetrate deep into the cortex of hair and mingles with the natural energy of hair, softening, relaxing and/or drying (if a blow dryer is involved) the hair strand from inside out. Just like negative ions, all styling tools made from tourmaline, ceramic and titanium give out infrared heat too. It offers a softer and quicker way to dry and style hair and also evenly heats hair by breaking the water molecules into small-sized particles that can be easily absorbed and create a protective layer that retains moisture.

Ceramic

Ceramic is perhaps the least expensive way to a healthy IR and negative ion technology. However, not all ceramic flat irons are made equally. You can even face a product that is just coated with ceramic, with the actual tool made of another metal or even plastic. Here, you will have to spend more for more layers of ceramic. However, it is better for the health of your hair, that you buy solid ceramic plates which don’t chip and damage your hair with hot spots like conventional appliances do. But ceramic being softer, you will have to handle it carefully.

Titanium

This material is a hardcore way to eliminate frizz and static electricity prior to starting. It has all the benefits of negative ions and IR heat, but in a natural metal which is sturdy as steel but lighter by 40%. Titanium products are perhaps more suitable for professionals or for very coarse thick hair. It you have thin hair and want to use titanium flat iron, ensure that it is on the lowest temperature setting. Also keep an eye on how many times per week you have to use it.

Tourmaline

By now, you might be aware of materials that are helpful in reforming your unruly hair. However, tourmaline is not a standalone material that can be used for styling your hair. It is actually a semi-precious gemstone which is crushed and applied to ceramic or titanium to offer you a super boost of negative ions. When tourmaline is added to ceramic, it forms an even smoother glide for far less friction with hair than plain ceramic. This makes hair suffer less damage, require less product and get superb shine. So, if you need an extra TLC for your hair, investing in a tourmaline-infused flat iron is highly advisable.
