Hair extensions are great for adding a length or volume to your natural hair. However, do they confuse you as to their types, quality, prices and other such matters? Here are some useful tips shared by celebrity hair stylists, which will help you with your many questions about hair extensions.
1. Choose a Cheaper Option – Hair Weft
A hair weft is hair – real or synthetic – stitched together on top to form a section. You can buy a human hair weft, preferably 12-inch straight silky, and a pack of clips of hair extensions. Take both of them to your tailor and make her/him stitch a few clips (usually three will suffice – one on either end and one in the middle) on the top of the weft whereby you can secure the weft on your head. Be sure to purchase just the length you desire, so that you won’t be paying for extra, particularly in case of human hair, because it can be expensive.
2. Choose Clip-in when in a Hurry
When you want something quickly, clip-in hair extensions are the best. But to keep the clips secured you will have to roughen your hair at their roots by teasing them; that will ensure that the clips won’t slide down after some time. For this purpose, a teasing brush can be used. There is also another option of teasing your hair above where you will clip the extensions in horizontally, so that it can get some volume. That will not show the extensions out because your fuller hair will help them blend in better.
3. Extensions for Up-do or Ponytail
While wearing a ponytail or an up-do too, you can make your hair look fuller with hair extensions. The trick is to place the clip-ins upside down with your roots (and below a hair layer so that it won’t show out).
While pulling off the look, with the end of your teasing comb, part your hair in a top and bottom layer, and clip the top part up. Then tease the spots near root at an angle (to avoid extensions being seen out) where clips will place the extension in. Lastly keep pulling your hair up and get the style you want.
4. Become Your Own Stylist or Visit a Stylist
You can cut extensions if you don’t want the length but only volume. Sit in front of mirror and section your hair down in the center of the back and take it all forward. Keep your body straight and turn head to right, and comb it flat. Next clip the extension in one inch away from your section. Once it is secure, trim it to match your own hair length. Do the same for the left side.
Other alternative is to visit a stylist to get your extensions cut from her/him to get the desired length. Also you can learn from her/him how to put the extensions properly so as to look perfect.
5. Sponge Rollers
If you have curly hair and want to use synthetic extensions, dampen the strands the night before you want to wear them and air dry them. While they are drying roll the hair up into large sponge rollers and leave overnight. Remember, whenever you want to change the hair texture, you need to dampen the hair. This will give the extensions a natural look and will remove the artificial shine, so that they will blend well with your natural hair.
