You probably did your best to dress right and make yourself look presentable when you went to the job interview that got you the job you are currently working at, but if you are like most people, that is not how you dress to work every day nowadays.
While your office might be liberal, without any strict dress regulations per se, this does not mean that anything goes. What you wear largely affects how people will relate with you. Wearing the wrong thing might affect your fellow workmates, disgust clients and displease your employer, which is the last thing you want to do!
Here are some of the worst fashion offences committed in the modern day office – make sure you are not a culprit!
- Provocative dressing
A recent survey carried out in offices showed that the greatest fashion offence that happened in offices was workmates turning up in the office in provocative dressing. This definition covered everything from see-through clothing, to very short skirts, to clothing that was too tight, to blouses that exposed cleavage, and spaghetti straps.
While different people had issues with different types of clothing, at least one or two people in each office had an issue with every type of dressing mentioned above. It was not only men who complained of being distracted by such dressing either, quite a number of women said that they were distracted as well.
- Golf attire
Wearing golf attire (or any other sporting attire for that matter) to the office communicates that you are not serious with the work you are doing. True, you might be coming from a game or heading for one, but you need not let everyone in the office know that!
While you might be allowed to dress casual to the office, strive for the smart casual look, such as a shirt and plain pair of jeans, you will look much more professional.
- Tattoos
While having a tattoo on your body is an entirely personal decision, there are quite a number of people who have complained of being distracted by them. If you have a tattoo(s), wear clothing that covers them up while in the office to avoid making your coworkers or clients uncomfortable.
- Flip-flops
While it might not be reasonable to expect every woman in the work place to be in heels constantly throughout the day, especially if there is a bit of walking involved, wearing flip flops communicates a care-free attitude that is more suited for the beach than the work place.
Get a pair of decent sandals at least, or some low-heeled shoes. There are men who wear flip-flops to the office as well; this is a big no-no!
