Tips for Choosing a Skirt for Your Body Shape

Posted by on Jul 9, 2013 in Fashion Tips |

fashionEveryone has a shape. It could be rectangle, pear, apple or diamond – among many others. When buying skirts, you need to think about your body shape. This will help you find something that is flattering so you can feel comfortable while out. You will also impress and make your friends jealous.

1.      The Length of the Skirt: Most body shapes have great legs and you should show them off. Knee length or calf-length skirts are perfect for doing this, and work with skirts for all types of occasions. If you want to hide your legs for any reason then you can look into the longer maxi skirts. However, then you have more decisions over the type of shoes you will wear!

 2.      The Cut of the Skirt: The cut will determine how the skirt hangs. Pencil skirts may look great on the figurine in the store but they won’t look like that on you. The stores use hour-glass shape as this is the look that everyone wants. This makes everything very misleading. The problem is pencil skirts only work well on those with hour-glass figures – try them on and see how they sit!

It’s really important to consider how the skirt sits. Which area does it cling to? How does it make the rest of the skirt fall. Pleated skirts are great for those with a rectangle shape as they make the bottom look bigger. A-line skirts are perfect for most shapes since they flow outwards instead of clinging anywhere.

 3.      Picking the Right Colour: Colour can have a major impact of how a skirt looks on your shape. It can be easy to opt for a dark colour but this isn’t necessarily going to be a good option. Part of this will depend on the colour of your top but you are generally best opting for a darker colour than the top. This could mean opting for a bold red if you have a white top.

However, lighter colours work really well for long skirts and a-line ones. They flow and look more summery. Consider these but match them with darker tops.

4.      Should You Wear a Belt: Some skirts come with belts attached to them – that doesn’t mean you have to wear the belt! There are some considerations to make first and the most important is where the belt sits. For most shapes, belts around the hips are a big no-no – if you are a rectangle shape or inverted triangle though these belts can be really useful.

Waist belts are worth the consideration to make your waist look smaller. If you have an apple shape, avoid belts as much as possible as they just make your shape look worse.

Dress for your shape. Skirts work for most people, as long as you choose the right cut, colour and length. Watch out for the accessories and try the skirts on before you buy to make sure you are comfortable.
