Vintage is all the rage right now. Clothing and accessories are going more toward old styles. Pearls are making a stronger appearance as they did in the 60’s. Actresses like Audrey Hepburn and Julie Andrews wore them in some of the big movies of that time.
It’s crazy that a would-be 83 year-old woman could come back two generations later. Audrey Hepburn’s beloved style on and off the big screen has made a second large appearance in the form of Halloween costumes and posters on walls of college apartments. Young people adore her fashion sense, but above all, they adore her class. Those black dresses with clean lines, createthe iconicdark thin silhouette. With a touch ofpearls to accent she defines a classic clean look.
I think what makes Audrey so popular is not merely her style, but her class. I can’t picture some of the popular women of today such as Lady Gaga will have such a lasting impression
Pearls come and go, but actresses like Audrey and others, who made them look so great in the past, may be the reason why they stick around. Not many can sport pearls like Audrey Hepburn did, but Julie Andrews did give her a run for her money in the movie Thoroughly Modern Millie in the late 60’s. If you haven’t seen it, the introduction of the movie emphasizes pearls and fashion in a humorous way. Small town Millie, learns how to dress for the city by walking the streets and shopping for a get-up that includes a string of pearls around her neck. She then struts through the street proud of her new sense of fashion, but then stops and realizes that her pearls won’t hang straight like the other women’s pearls do.
Even with her humor and charm, Julie Andrews hasn’t come close to Audrey Hepburn in popularity.I guess she was cast well for the role of Thoroughly Modern Millie, since Julie Andrews is just not vintage in people’s minds. We love vintage! That, and class.
